This paper concludes "Based on the randomized evidence of immediate TARGIT-IORT, which has been shown to be an effective alternative to EBRT, it is clear that the preferred timing of using TARGIT-IORT is immediately - during the initial surgical excision of breast cancer. However, when immediate TARGIT-IORT has not been possible, the long-term data presented in this article [describing the results of the randomised trial of Delayed second-procedure single-dose intraoperative radiotherapy vs Whole breast external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) given over 3-6 weeks] may help inform discussions by clinicians and patients who wish to avoid a prolonged postoperative course of EBRT"
